東京都の島嶼部を除く地域の中央よりやや西側の、多摩川中流左岸武蔵野台地上に位置します。市域のほとんどは平地であるが、南部の多摩川沿いに立川崖線、北東端に国分寺崖線が見られます。JR中央本線・南武線・青梅線が乗り入れ、多摩地区最大の乗車人員数の立川駅と、多摩地区を南北に結ぶ多摩都市モノレール線の立川北駅・立川南駅があり、立川駅周辺は百貨店などの大型商業施設やオフィスが集積しています。多摩地域では町田駅・吉祥寺駅・八王子駅と並び駅前が発展しています。立川駅は、中央線特別快速（中央特快）電車で東京駅から40分、新宿駅からは25分ほどです。また、立川飛行場跡地には立川広域防災基地が設置されており、首都圏での大規模災害発生時に災害応急対策活動の拠点として機能します。立川飛行場跡地は他にも昭和記念公園やファーレ立川などの大規模な公共施設・商業施設に整備されました。

Located on the Musashino Plateau on the left bank of the Tama River in the central-western part of the area excluding the islands of Tokyo, Tachikawa City is situated. While most of the city area is flat, Tachikawa features the Tachikawa Escarpment along the Tama River in the south and the Kokubunji Escarpment at the northeast end. The city is served by JR Chuo Main Line, Nambu Line, and Ome Line, with Tachikawa Station being the busiest in the Tama region in terms of passenger traffic. Additionally, Tachikawa is connected by the Tama Monorail Line with Tachikawa-Kita Station and Tachikawa-Minami Station running north-south in the Tama region. The area around Tachikawa Station is a hub for large commercial facilities such as department stores and offices. Similar to Machida Station, Kichijoji Station, and Hachioji Station in the Tama region, Tachikawa Station has seen significant development in its vicinity. Tachikawa Station is approximately 40 minutes from Tokyo Station and 25 minutes from Shinjuku Station via the Chuo Line Special Rapid Service. Furthermore, the Tachikawa Wide-Area Disaster Prevention Base is located on the former site of Tachikawa Airfield, serving as a hub for disaster response activities in the event of a large-scale disaster in the Tokyo metropolitan area. The former Tachikawa Airfield site has been redeveloped to include large public facilities and commercial establishments such as Showa Kinen Park and FARE Tachikawa.
